Are Eq riders more fashionable than Eventers?

When I first thought about this question, my immediate reaction was, “Yes, absolutely.” Then I looked it up on Google just to see what others were saying—and sure enough, it matched my thoughts almost exactly. So let’s dive into why this difference exists.

First, let’s clarify what I mean by Eq riders versus Eventers. By "Eq riders," I’m referring to those in the hunter, jumper, and equitation rings—sometimes dressage riders as well, since they often fall into that more polished, traditional category. Eventers, on the other hand, compete in a three-phase sport: dressage, show jumping, and cross-country. That last phase, cross-country, adds a whole new level of grit and intensity.

Eventers are often seen as adrenaline junkies—bold, brave, and maybe even a little crazy in the best way. Eq riders, while equally focused and courageous, tend to operate in a more controlled and refined atmosphere.

And that sets the stage for the difference in style preferences.

In the Eq world, many riders have access to grooms or support, and the setting allows for a consistently polished appearance. You're not trekking through muddy fields or dealing with unpredictable terrain, so it’s easier to maintain that sleek, "always turned out" look. Clean breeches, crisp shirts, tailored coats—style is part of the discipline.

Eventers live a different reality. You’re walking mile-long courses through fields, jumping solid fences, often riding several horses a day—and you’re going to get dirty. Even with a groom, the environment calls for practicality. Comfort and function come first, and most eventers embrace that. A stylish outfit is great, but not a priority. That said, you’ll occasionally see a super chic eventer trot by—and I love that! Personally, I bring some of my hunter-style sensibility into the eventing world, and it works for me.

But here's the bottom line: anyone can wear whatever they want. These worlds are absolutely allowed to mix. Whether you care deeply about your riding outfit or not at all, that freedom is one of my favorite things about horses. There’s space for every style and every rider—and that’s what makes it so fun.
